Lions, Lions eveywhere!

One of the most epic parts of my trip was waking up to the lions roaring in the distance. Defiantly the best sound of the bush in the early mornings. Throughout our trip we saw SO MANY LIONS and the sightings were truly epic.

Here is a little rundown of some of the epic-ness:

  • Lions on terminate mounds!

  • Lions hunting a giraffe!

  • Lions, grooming cuddling & sleeping!

  • Lions mating!

  • Lions from the Sausage Tree Pride eating a wildebeest calf with their father who is dominate male over their pride. This male sadly was killed the week after we left from a nomadic male who came into this territory (see last picture below).

  • Lions playing tag!

  • Lions playing with a stick!

  • Lions hunting antelope!

  • Lions with cubs!

  • Lion cubs suckling from mom!

  • And this legendary walk by on my instagram —> Lion Walk by

  • And for me the most epic lion sighting? After watching lions hunting they all gathered back together during a massive down pour. Then a double rainbow appeared over them! See first photo below :)

I will just leave it at that and let you see photos of these amazing animals!

Lions form prides that consist of adult females, sub-adults, and cubs. The adult females in a pride are typically all related.

Did you know that male lions can weigh up to 570 lbs. and females up to 277 lbs.

Lions frequently hunt cooperatively, and tackle a wide range of prey, from rodents to large herbivores. Cubs playing with each other is very important in developing skills for hunting in the future.

Sadly once lions roamed across much of Africa now they have has fallen victim to  complex threats such as human-lion conflict, livestock and human encroachment into habitat, loss of habitat, poaching and trophy hunting.

According the Lion Recovery Fund “Within Africa, the species has suffered a steep decline in both range and numbers. One century ago there were 200,000 lions, today there are likely just over 20,000. In the last quarter century, lion numbers have declined by half.”
